One in every five people in the world own a smartphone, making usage of the in-phone camera the dominant medium for capturing memories. That said, even with access to high-quality video cameras, and footage shot more frequently, much of it remains on the phone in raw, original form. When Vine launched, its straightforward 6-second video format was so simple, the service catapulted to over 40 Million users very quickly. While a huge leap forward, video creation remained autonomous, reflecting the perspective of just one person.
Vid makes it easy and fun to co-create videos for all occasions. Once opening the app, users can shoot video within the app, apply fast and slow motion (or mixture of both), add comments and hashtags and then pass along for friends to collaborate. Friends and relatives that are unable to be present for important life events can create collage dedications for newlyweds or new parents, and large numbers of friends can creatively come together and say happy birthday. VID’s geo-location features also enable users to invite people nearby to add on their own footage, creating a collage of short-form video from the same event – all from different perspectives.
“Imagine the possibilities for groups of people – friends or strangers with similar taste - at the same concert or sporting event - co-creating a video together within minutes,” says Sanjay Subhedar, managing director of Storm Ventures. “At a time when it is prevalent for start-ups to innovate, then concern themselves with monetization later, I was attracted to Vid for a number of reasons. The micro-content genre appeals to younger mobile users, a highly sought after market for advertisers. Additionally, Vid’s social capabilities combined with the popular short-form video format, leads to high volumes of engagement, something creators love, making it inherently viral.”
“People are relying on their smartphones to help them capture the special moments in their lives so they can share it with others,” said Veysel Berk, CEO of VID. “In fact, according to a recent industry report 44% of tablet owners and 32% of smartphone users have increased their video consumption on these mobile platforms compared to 12 months ago. Now, with Vid, we enable them to include their friends and family in the creation process, creating collaborative memories that transcend geographical barriers.”
VID has raised about $1.2 million in seed funding with notable Angel investors including Masao Tejima, president of OpenTable Japan, Sharmila Mulligan, Silicon Valley veteran hailing from HP and Netscape, David Kellogg, Daniel Terry, CEO, Pocket Gems, among others. The Angel round also includes investment from Storm Ventures, Tenex Capital Fund, DBO Capital and the Orrick Venture Fund.
Vid is free and can be downloaded from the Apple App store today.
